“You are always wearing your letters” is something all members should take to heart. It’s not saying members are always wearing a t-shirt or hat with “AKPsi” displayed. This phrase references how Alpha Kappa Psi is represented through any actions said or done. Anything and everything (both the good and the bad) represents a chapter, other members, and the fraternity as a whole; especially during the summer.
Just like hiring managers check references to verify employment and personal character, determining your affiliation with AKPsi is not difficult. Everything put out can be a direct reflection of the fraternity. Even if letters are not present in any physical form, there are many other ways to find out what organization you represent.
When you are awarded a national honor. When you start a business your first year of college. When you place in a case competition. When you put a chapter officer position on LinkedIn. When you join other organizations on campus. When you go on a volunteer trip with your chapter. When you interview for a job, you represent AKPsi.
When you wear that inappropriate shirt. When you post to social media using “clever” hashtags. When you are traveling abroad and disrespect other cultures. When you Snapchat a picture of letters and solo cups. When a new member has to be treated for over-consuming alcohol, you represent AKPsi.
There will always be members that do not understand or care, but you should set an example as a servant leader. Be the voice that tells a fellow member their actions will have consequences. Let them know the picture they took should not be posted. Make sure if allowing alcohol at an event, proper AKPsi policies are followed. If you have uncertainties or want additional information or advice, reach out to the members of the Judiciary Committee.
Joining Alpha Kappa Psi doesn’t have to mean changing yourself or your values, it means exemplifying the core values of AKPsi to their fullest potential. You are taking on a responsibility of not only representing yourself, but the current, future and former members of your chapter, as well as all of Alpha Kappa Psi.
