INDIANAPOLIS (September 14, 2016) – Alpha Kappa Psi will be participating in National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) again this year, which will be observed September 19-23. NHPW raises awareness about the culture of hazing not only with college campuses, but with organizations, communities and individuals. The purpose of NHPW is to generate awareness so that hazing prevention can occur on a daily basis; not just during one week.
Throughout National Hazing Prevention Week, Alpha Kappa Psi will be spreading the message against hazing and encouraging conversations. Educational resources will be unveiled each day, including a webinar “Unveiling the Facts: The Truth About Hazing”, presented by Sandi Edwards (former National President of Alpha Xi Delta) and Liz Vickers (Chapter Services Coordinator for Alpha Kappa Psi). During the webinar, the presenters will explore the mystifying truths about hazing, the dangers it presents, and how people can join the fight for hazing prevention. Hazing is not a means of gaining respect or showing loyalty, but a demonstration of power that has lasting negative effects. It has no place in Alpha Kappa Psi or any organization.
Alongside National Hazing Prevention Week, AKPsi is offering amnesty to members for the third consecutive year. Amnesty provides all pledges and student members – especially executive board members – the opportunity to openly discuss events or situations with risk management implications without fear of repercussions.
Alpha Kappa Psi encourages its members to hold discussions, activities and events revolving around the discussion of hazing prevention even after the week ends. Bringing attention to the hazing culture is the first step in eliminating it from an organization.
