Meet Desiree Williams, Digital Education Coordinator for Alpha Kappa Psi. The Digital Education Coordinator is a new position which assists the Director of Education with the Fraternity’s educational programs and initiatives through development of the Fraternity’s resources and online educational programs. Desiree started on staff in May of 2018 after graduating from Ball State University in 2016. Find out what you and Desiree have in common!
- Before working at the Heritage Center, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I was a gymnastics coach for two years. I was a gymnast for a little more than 15 years, so it was really fun to return to the gym where I trained and sort of give back to the younger kids just starting out in the sport.
- Least favorite Food?
Any type of seafood.
- If you were an animal what would you be?
I think I’d be a dolphin because I love the water and I’ve always wanted to know more about the ocean than what we can see.
- Are you messy or organized?
Organization is my middle name.
- What is the favorite part about working at the Heritage Center?
My favorite part about working at the Heritage Center is the people. It’s a small office, so it’s helpful to be surrounded by genuinely nice and funny co-workers that you can look forward to chatting with daily.
- How do you define success?
I put a lot of emphasis on to-do lists and accountability, so I’d say success is accomplishing the goals you set for yourself and having loving people around you to celebrate with in those moments.
- What is your hidden talent?
I don’t have any hidden talents other than gymnastics, which isn’t really hidden, but I guess I would say that I’m a fast reader. When I was homeschooled for two years in grade school, I would read a few books per week.
- Where is your hometown?
Fishers, IN
- What is your favorite meal?
Buffalo chicken in any form is my go-to.
- If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
I’d want to be in New York or California reporting entertainment news.
- What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m passionate about the entertainment industry and all that goes into creating TV shows and movies, so I spend my free time learning more about that and catching up on the latest news.
- What does true leadership mean to you?
To me, true leadership is when someone can take control of the room in a respectful manner, but also knows when it’s time to let another step up and grow.
- What does a typical day look like for you?
At AKPsi, I’m working on designing the educational programs we create to inform our students, alumni and volunteers about the fraternity and professional development. I also work as a freelance reporter for a local newspaper, so that takes up most of my evenings.
- What are your hopes for our industry (Greek Life)?
I hope the public will keep an open mind instead of listening only to the negative news cycle. There is so much potential for personal growth, career development and friendship in Greek Life, which can be beneficial to everyone.
- If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why?
Julie Plec. She is a television writer and director. I am absolutely in awe of her creativity, wit, and ability to continue surprising the audience at every turn. I’d love to learn how she got to where she is and experience a day in her life.
