INDIANAPOLIS (July 25, 2016) – Even during the summer months, AKPsi chapters are hard at work. Last weekend, the Beta Iota Chapter at the University at Buffalo held a résumé workshop for more than 220 students in the Education Opportunity Program (EOP).
The Education Opportunity Program provides a three week pre-freshman summer prep course to students that have just completed high school and are entering the university in the upcoming semester. “I worked as a residential councilor last summer for the Educational Opportunity Program,” said Haider Tawakali, Buffalo ’15. “Many of these students do not have résumés and many more were never taught how to write a professional, clean résumé. I thought since I am doing the program once again this year, it would be a great opportunity to educate these individuals on the importance of having a great résumé.”
Summer jobs, internships, classes and vacations couldn’t stop the members of the Beta Iota Chaper from giving their time to teach incoming students résumé writing skills to set them up for success. “A couple of other brothers and myself have jobs or internships in the field of human resources,” said Justin Hamlet, Buffalo ’14. “We have a lot of experience dealing with résumés and we wanted to share what we have learned. I would say our drive for this workshop was to really get the incoming freshman to understand how important a résumé is.” The chapter wanted to get the students thinking about future jobs and what they are going to do throughout college to improve their résumés. After the workshop, many students began sending in their résumés with hopes of improvement.
When asked if the chapter had any other programs planned for the summer, Tawakili said he plans to work with the chapter’s executive board to hold an interview etiquette workshop in the upcoming weeks. “Currently we are participating in the Involvement Fair where we table twice a week in order for early recruitment and exposure for our chapter,” said Izazul Khan, Buffalo ’14. “Being here throughout the summer has taught me a lot about my organization and allowed me to try different things within. As the new vice president of operations, I look forward to doing even greater things throughout the academic year.”
