A sampling of the more than 106,000 pencils collected for CIS.
In keeping with our core value of service, Alpha Kappa Psi partnered with Communities in School of Greater New Orleans to provide pencils to the children in the area. Why pencils? This is the #1 need of the children enrolled in the schools supported by CIS.
Communities in Schools of Greater New Orleans serves 5000 students across 12 New Orleans public schools; both charter and Recovery School District operated schools. CIS provides resources to students in public schools to empower them to achieve in life. Every pencil collected will go to a student that is getting after school help and needs a pencil to do their work.
During the Saturday Awards Luncheon on August 10, AKPsi presented CIS president Sara Massey with more than 106,000 pencils. What began as a goal to collect 14,000 pencils, or one per student member, became a friendly competition between student and alumni chapters alike. For having collected 7,888 pencils, the student members from the Eta Lambda Chapter at UNLV and for having collected 17,511 pencils, the members of the Capital Area Alumni Chapter joined fraternity president Alexander Sultan for the presentation.
